Professional Development Materials

The professional development materials listed below can be used in a variety of professional development settings, as well as individual professional reading/viewing.

Assessing Math Concepts (Kathy Richardson) is a series of nine books. The series focus is on assessment of core mathematics concepts children need to understand. Each book provides information for the teacher and tips for organizing information.

Balanced Assessment for the Mathematics Curriculum (Sandra K. Wilcox and Hugh Burkhard) provides a set of classroom-tested performance tasks and rubrics, with guidance and examples of how to use the tasks and evaluate student work. Items are appropriate for grades 3-12.

Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction (Thomas Carpenter) is written to help readers understand children's intuitive mathematical thinking and how to use that understanding to help children learn school mathematics with understanding. This book includes two CDs.

Making It Work in the Classroom (Kathy Richardson) is a two-video and guide set that illustrates how to create and implement a learning environment where students develop mathematical understanding and learn to love math.

Mathematics: Assessing for Understanding (Marilyn Burns) is a three-part video series. The one-on-one interviews with students, aged 7-12, focus on number sense, understanding of place value, estimation, computation, fractions, and students' processes of thinking, reasoning, and problem solving.

Talking Mathematics (Rebecca Corwin) is a resource designed to help staff developers and college instructors create an environment where teachers are challenged and supported as they do math together, reflecting on mathematics and their pedagogy. In the process, teachers explore the mathematics that children do as well as the thinking children bring to it. Talking Mathematics can be tailored to many different settings to support inquiry about Standards-based teaching and learning.

Teaching for Understanding (Marilyn Burns) is a series of three videotapes designed to help K-6 teachers focus on how to implement the goals of the NCTM Standards. Part 1 shows whole class lessons, Part 2 features small groups of students working independently, and Part 3 shows how communication in math lessons, oral and written, supports student learning.

The Learning Environment (Kathy Richardson) is a videotape of the actual classroom-learning environment that supports teaching for understanding and concept development. A video guide is also provided.

Thinking with Numbers: Number Talks (Kathy Richardson) is a set of two videos and guide. Children are participating in a mental math session designed to help teachers determine what children are thinking and doing when adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.
