1st Edition ELL Support

Investigations in Number, Data, and Space (1998, 2004, and 2006 editions) is designed to help teachers help all students develop mathematical proficiency. Based on the large body of educational research on how children learn mathematics, Investigations is designed to engage and challenge all learners.

Tips for the Linguistically Diverse Classroom. Support for English-Language Learners is provided at strategic points throughout each curriculum unit. Concrete suggestions for modifications of the teaching strategies and for vocabulary work ensure all students have access to the mathematics and participate fully in math investigations. Two focus sections, Preview for the Linguistically Diverse Classroom and Vocabulary Support for Second-Language Learners, are also included in each curriculum unit.

Additional resources for English Language Learners include:

Family Letters in Six Languages. Each unit in the Investigations curriculum includes a family Letter, in English (PDF), that discusses the mathematical ideas that children are working on in class and suggests some ways to explore similar mathematices at home. These letters are also avilable in Spanish (PDF) , Hmong (PDF), Vietnamese (PDF), Cambodian (PDF), and Cantonese (PDF), for every unit in the first through fifth grades.

Spanish Blackline Masters. A complete set of blackline masters is available for each grade level, K through five. This set contains all the Student Sheets needed to teach an entire grade level of Investigations, as well as a Vocabulary Support Package that introduces key terms in Spanish.

Spanish Teaching Companions. A small booklet per unit is available for each K-5 curriculum unit. These booklets present teacher dialogue and instruction in Spanish.
