1st Grade: Teaching a New Unit

Where to Start

This document provides an overview of the important math content that should be read and worked through as one prepares to teach each of the Grade 1 units. The readings include key activities, essays about math ideas and how students come to understand them, and sample classroom conversations. They also highlight materials that need to be prepared, the assessment in the unit, and opportunities for review and practice. These Where to Start documents can be used to orient individuals or groups to the units they are preparing to teach.

Unit Guides

These study guides are designed to help teachers at a grade level become familiar and comfortable with the mathematical content, activities, and overall structure of each unit. Each Unit Guide provides a 3-hour professional development experience focused on the content and pedagogy of one unit. A sample Grade 1 Unit Guide is available for download below; a CD of all 52 Unit Guides is available for purchase from TERC. (Learn more about the Unit Guides, and about how to order a complete set.)
