The documents below describe and illustrate how the ideas of a strand develop across Grades K-5. The mathematical emphases that are the focus of the work in each grade are included, as are the relevant benchmarks.

The final two documents describe and illustrate important work that happens within the number and operations units at each grade level. (Note that these topics are not subtitles for any Investigations units.) The Place Value essay shows how the K-5 work on the structure of our number system supports the development of computational fluency. The Early Algebra essay explains what is meant by algebra in the elementary grades, and describes the generalizations that arise in the course of K-5 students' study of number and operations.
