For this reason, a number of Family Letters are provided at each grade level. Each curriculum unit includes the following two Family Letters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.terc.edu\/inv2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/M1-M2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">About the Mathematics in This Unit (pdf)<\/a>, which introduces families to the mathematics that their children will be doing and to the benchmarks for that unit<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.terc.edu\/inv2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/g3_u1_m7-8_familyletter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Related Activities to Try at Home (pdf)<\/a>, which suggests related activities that families can do together and children\u2019s books that support students\u2019 work in the mathematics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An additional letter provided in the first curriculum unit of the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.terc.edu\/inv2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/g5_u1_m23-24_familyletter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">About Mathematics Homework (pdf)<\/a>, gives suggestions for helping students with their homework by establishing a regular time for homework, setting up a good working environment, and asking productive questions. In grades 2-5, there is also <a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.terc.edu\/inv2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/g4_u1_m43-44_familyletter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Family Letter that focuses on the facts (pdf)<\/a>\u2014both the ways students are learning them and how parents can support this work at home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/investigations.terc.edu\/inv2\/curriculum-components\/student-math-handbooks\/\" rel=\"noopener\">The Student Math Handbook<\/a> is another valuable tool for working with families. The Math Words and Ideas section of this book provides an overview of the year\u2019s mathematics work, a closer look at the ideas and the kinds of problems students encounter, examples of student solutions, and questions that families and students can talk about together.
