Students worked alone, on sheets of many similar problems, or with flashcards. The goal of such drill was memorization and speed was key. Today&#8217;s students need more than this. They must achieve fluency with the same content that their parents were expected to master, and more. They must be able to solve problems accurately, efficiently, flexibly, and with understanding.
