Your Child’s Role

Children, particularly in the upper elementary grades, should take primary responsibility for completing their homework.

• Children should be aware that mathematics may be challenging at times and that it is their responsibility to work through problems with the support of their family and teachers. Math is something everyone can do and enjoy.
• If children complete their homework in an afterschool setting, it is their shared responsibility to talk with you about it.
• Children should have a plan of action regarding what happens if they do not understand the material or assignment. This may involve working with a family member, sibling, or friend from the class. If these solutions don’t work, you can write a note to the teacher explaining any difficulties in completing the assignment, along with some examples of what was tried.
