Making Sense of Fractions

Online Class

This 7-week asynchronous online workshop focuses on the teaching and learning of fractions in the Investigations curriculum. Through online interactive activities and discussions, participants learn how grade 2-5 students make sense of, compare, and compute with fractions using representations and reasoning. Participants will also consider how to best support students in their learning.

In this workshop, participants:

  • experience the development of ideas about fractions in Investigations across grades 2-5
  •  engage in activities that involve representing, comparing and computing with fractions
  • learn about models and representations that support students in making sense of fractions and operations involving fractions
  • examine classroom video, vignettes, and student work to see how students work on fractions in Investigations and how teachers support students’ progress
  • consider issues of equity as students engage in the work of making sense of fractions

“This course has truly been eye opening. I learned fractions through memorizing procedures. Fractions are no longer scary to me, but a topic that will be fun and engaging to teach.”
